Colorado State University Forecasters Predict Above-Average 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

FORT COLLINS – In its 28th year of issuing predictions, the Colorado State University forecast team today predicted an above-average 2011 Atlantic basin hurricane season. The team slightly reduced its early December prediction, but still called for an active season based on current La Nina conditions that are expected to transition to near-neutral conditions during the heart of the hurricane season.

The CSU team now calls for 16 named storms instead of 17 forming in the Atlantic basin between June 1 and Nov. 30. Nine of those are expected to turn into hurricanes with five developing into major hurricanes (Saffir/Simpson category 3-4-5) with sustained winds of 111 mph or greater.

“We expect that anomalously warm tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures combined with neutral tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures will contribute to an active season,” said Phil Klotzbach of the CSU Tropical Meteorology Project. “We have reduced our forecast slightly from early December due to a combination of recent ocean warming in the eastern and central tropical Pacific and recent cooling in the tropical Atlantic.”

Costal residents should be prepared in advance for any crisis

“It is recommended that all vulnerable coastal residents make the same hurricane preparations every year, regardless of how active or inactive the seasonal forecast is,” Klotzbach said. “It takes only one landfall event near you to make this an active season.”

The hurricane forecast team made this early April forecast based on a new forecast scheme that relies on 29 years of historical data. The hurricane team’s forecasts are based on the premise that global oceanic and atmospheric conditions – such as El Nino, sea surface temperatures, sea level pressures, etc. – that preceded active or inactive hurricane seasons in the past provide meaningful information about similar conditions that will likely occur in the current year. The team’s annual predictions are intended to provide a best estimate of activity to be experienced during the upcoming season, not an exact measure.

“We remain – since 1995 – in a favorable multi-decadal period for enhanced Atlantic Basin hurricane activity, which is expected to continue for the next 10-15 years or so,” said Gray. “Except for the very destructive hurricane seasons of 2004-2005, United States coastal residents have experienced no other major landfalling hurricanes since 1999. This recent 9 of 11-year period without any major landfall events should not be expected to continue.”

Five years since 1949 exhibited February-March characteristics most similar to the oceanic and atmospheric features observed during February-March 2011: 1955, 1996, 1999, 2006 and 2008. All years but 2006 had either neutral or La Nina conditions during the hurricane season, and all years but 2006 were very active hurricane seasons.

The team predicts that tropical cyclone activity in 2011 will be approximately 175 percent of the average season. By comparison, 2010 witnessed tropical cyclone activity that was 196 percent of the average season.</pP

The hurricane forecast team’s probabilities for a major hurricane making landfall on U.S. soil:

A 72 percent chance that at least one major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. coastline in 2011 (the long-term average probability is 52 percent).

A 48 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. East Coast, including the Florida Peninsula (the long-term average is 31 percent).

A 47 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall on the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle west to Brownsville (the long-term average is 30 percent).

The team also predicts a 61 percent chance of a major hurricane tracking into the Caribbean (the long-term average is 42 percent).

Probabilities of tropical storm-force, hurricane-force and major hurricane-force winds occurring at specific locations along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts are listed on the forecast team’s Landfall Probability website at http://www.e-transit.org/hurricane. The site provides U.S. landfall probabilities for 11 regions and 205 individual counties along the U.S. coastline from Brownsville, Texas, to Eastport, Maine. Landfall probabilities for regions and counties are adjusted based on the current climate and its projected effects on the upcoming hurricane season. Probabilities are also available for the Caribbean and Central America. Klotzbach and Gray update the site regularly with assistance from the GeoGraphics Laboratory at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts.

The team will issue forecast updates on June 1 and Aug. 3.

Google: a new tool for U.S. Intelligence

NPR reports that wiretaps and other stealth intercept methods are proving to be inadequate when it comes to helping U.S. Intelligence agents clue into social unrest and uprisings. However, social media such as Facebook and Twitter are proving to be very usefull indicators for checking the pulse of the populace.

The key to using this info is in developing ways to assess the data rapidly on a large scale. That’s where Google Trends comes in.

Army Intel officers are looking at past data from Google Trends during the recent uprisings in foreign countries to see what patterns can be found for use in predicting such future events.

This isn’t the first time “Big Brother” has turned to the power of Google. The National Institures of Health took notice back in 2009 when Google Flu became a better predicter of flu outbreaks than their own data.

If you aren’t using Google key words and analytics to check business trends, you may be missing out on some great opportunities. If it’s good enough for U.S. Intelleigence, maybe you should be taking some time to learn about it.

You can read the full NPR storey here:

US energy policy for the coming decade will be shaped by two disasters less than a year apart: the Deepwater Horizon explosion and blow-out in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, and the Sendai earthquake and tsunami less than a year later.

The first has led to significant curbs on future supply of fossil fuels in the US; the second is likely to cause a significant increase in demand.

Websites For Businesses Who Don’t Have Time For Websites

You know the importance of your business having a presence on the internet. You may have heard or read about the buzz surrounding the new local search initiatives on the part of Google and other major search engines. Maybe you already know that 73% of all searches are somehow related to local searches and that 51% of people who search for product information characterize themselves as “shop online purchase offline.”

There’s a huge hungry crowd of customers out there. But you just don’t have the time or resources to put up an efficient, effective website. You’re too busy doing what you do best, running your business.

Maybe you’ve done a few things like signing up with some directories. Maybe your industry has a directory service as well. You get your name and contact info out there along with millions of others. But have you ever received a lead or a sale from those efforts? Would you even know if you did?

The Challenge

Marketing is a vital part of any business. You can have the best bicycle shop, or be the best tax accountant in town but if nobody knows you exist it just doesn’t matter does it? That’s why you spend money on the yellow pages and local advertising.

But websites are different in your mind aren’t they. With the yellow pages you call your account representative, work out an ad, pay the bill and it’s done. You don’t need special skills. But a website? A website takes technical skills and knowledge of search engine optimization so it can be found. Specifically local search engine optimization so it can be found by local people who are potential customers or clients.

You simply don’t have the time for that which means you’d have to pay big bucks to outsource the job right?

The Solution

Actually the answer to that question is “not necessarily.” There is a remarkably functional, flexible and user friendly free website software called WordPress. It is an open source platform available to everyone and millions have used it for their blogs and small businesses. The only costs associated with it are the purchase of a domain name ($10) and a hosting service ($10 a month).

WordPress websites are loved by Google because they are structured in a way that makes it easy for the Google spiders to crawl. It’s loaded with automatic features that even let the search engines know immediately when you update the site with new content.

But the design and the structure of a blog is not ideal for either the professional look of your business or, more importantly, local search.

There is a solution though that is effective both in terms of ranking in the search engines and low maintenance. The SmallBiz WordPress Theme provides a professional business theme and design that can quickly get you in front of local customers and do it with a minimum amount of time required by you. You can have an effective presence on the web without digging into the time you need to run the business. That of course does not count the time you spend responding to customer requests that are generated by the site.

If you want to take advantage of the enormous marketing power of local search, visit check it out today and at least investigate the possibilities of a search optimized website for your business.

Are you making a big mistake with your ad copy?

You have written your long sales copy (making liberal use of the seven most persuasive words in the English Language, of course).

You have included 15 powerful testimonials that defy every possible objection a prospect could raise.

You have at least 5 free bonus offers worth a mind boggling $947.99. …Theirs to keep no matter what!!!

You have your unconditional, no questions asked, double money back guarantee.

You have your squeeze page all ready to slide out and capture that all essential email address (necessary to really cash in on back end sales).

You have just scared off 98% of the people who will ever arrive at your web page.

They will probably never come back.

Why?

Because you have “positioned” yourself in their minds as an annoying direct marketer. A person to be avoided like the plague.

In their minds you have been lumped together with the pushy time share salesman who accosted them from a booth at their favorite restaurant on vacation last year. You are like an annoying card insert that keeps them from leafing through Sports Illustrated or Oprah. You are an Internet reincarnation of a snake oil salesman from the old west.

Direct advertising web sites have rapidly joined the ranks of junk mail and spam as items to be dispatched to the trash heap in the quickest possible time.

Only a gullible 1% to 2% at the fringes of the bell curve of curiosity will stop to consider your pitch. (A really, really good response rate is 2% for direct advertising.) These few are now your niche market.

Here Is The Dirty Little Secret That Internet Gurus Never Tell You

…because they don’t understand it.

Positioning is the most important element of media advertising.
The corollary is that your strategy is more important than what you say.
Without a firm understanding of these two, it won’t matter what you say or do, because no one will be listening.

Check out this landmark article on Positioning by by legendary marketing strategist Al Ries. http://www.ries.com/articles-positioningera.php And then, plan to come back here often and check out the latest posts.

Channelsurfing.net Gets a New Home Page

Popular link aggregator, channelsurfing.net, has a new home page courtesy of ICE- Homeland Security Investigations, Special Agent in Charge, New York Office. Visitors to the site now see this beautifully designed page warning about the dangers of reproducing or distributing copyrighted materials

The owner of the site, Brian McCarthy, was arrested last week and charged with criminal copyright infringement, a crime that carries a punishment of up to five years in prison and fines.

Is Link Aggregation a Chrime?

It turns out McCarthy was running a” link aggregation service” that pointed to other Web sites where streaming TV shows and sportscasts, many of them illegal, could be found. Moreover, when you clicked on a link on Channelsurfing, the target URL was opened in a new window and the illegal material was displayed with a surrounding banner that showed advertisements.

You may have chills running up and down your spine right now because “link aggregation” is a popular technique for building content and driving traffic to web sites. Aren’t we all encouraged to build links in order to gain page rank and credibility with the search engines? In fact aren’t all of the search engines from Google and Bing on down merely link aggregators. Many of their links (including the ones to the sites targeted by ICE in the drag net) point to sites that illegally take advantage of copyrighted media. How can you be sure that ICE is not breathing down your neck right now without you knowing about it?

Make Sure You Are Not Violating Copyrights

The key to determining if link aggregation is illegal concerns the matter of copyright violation. Beware! it is easier than you think to violate copyrights these days. If you link to any of the major news sources or blogs you better check their current usage policy. They may be more restrictive now than when you created the link. They may change without notice and many of them now include prohibitions against linking to anything but the home page or displaying links in a frame. You don’t want to be caught violating the law unaware. You certainly don’t want to do it on purpose.

Though the main focus for now is on media such as movies, pay-per-view, TV and other streaming content, who knows what the future holds! As news organizations seem to be making the move toward charging for access and protecting their media of all kinds, the heat may be on for prosecution of all types of online copyright infringement.

Maybe it is Time to Rethink How You Develop Web Content

Many of the get rich gurus promote the very techniques that get people like McCarthy in big trouble. They encourage you to build traffic by using media created by others and by building huge link farms. In reality, much of what they advise will actually get you penalized by the search engines and some of it may get you thrown in jail. The internet needs more quality original content, not more rehashed, aggregated material. You will build a stronger, more profitable business when you start thinking for yourself and putting out some really helpful original material.

I have reproduced the original press release on McCarthy below (by the way, it is public domain). I could have merely commented on the story and sent you to a link from any one of serveral major news outlets. But think of the disadvantages of doing that. 1) I would have to send you away from my site in the process…and that is a traffic killer. 2) I would have to consider the copyright restrictions of those news outlets. 3) I would have another link to keep track of in the future. 4) I would have missed the oportunity to write a truly creative piece that others may want to link to (putting me on the business end of linking).

February 2, 2011 New York, NYNew York investigators seize 10 websites that illegally streamed copyrighted sporting and pay-per-view events

NEW YORK – Seizure warrants have been executed against 10 websites that illegally streamed live sporting telecasts and pay-per-view events over the Internet, as part of an ongoing investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

The websites, which were seized Tuesday pursuant to a federal court order in the Southern District of New York, were among the most popular on the Internet for illegally distributing copyrighted sporting events. The websites are ATDHE.NET, CHANNELSURFING.NET, HQ-STREAMS.COM, HQSTREAMS.NET, FIRSTROW.NET, ILEMI.COM, IILEMI.COM, IILEMII.COM, ROJADIRECTA.ORG and ROJADIRECTA.COM.

The sites provided access to illegal, pirated telecasts of the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Each of these organizations holds the copyrights to the televised broadcasts of their respective sporting events. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York is asking that the domain names for these websites be forfeited.

“This swift action by our HSI New York special agents and analysts sends a clear message to website operators who mistakenly believe it’s worth the risk to take copyrighted programming and portray it as their own,” said ICE Director John Morton. “Protecting legitimate business interests is a priority for HSI and the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center and we will continue to aggressively investigate this type of crime with our law enforcement partners.”

“The illegal streaming of professional sporting events over the Internet deals a financial body blow to the leagues and broadcasters who are forced to pass their losses off to the fans in the form of higher priced tickets and pay-per-view events,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara. “With the Super Bowl just days away, the seizures of these infringing websites reaffirm our commitment to working with our law enforcement partners to protect copyrighted material and put the people who steal it out of business.”

According to the affidavit unsealed Wednesday, it is estimated that each year, sports leagues and broadcasters lose millions of dollars from the illegal distribution of copyrighted, live sporting events over the Internet. Such piracy threatens the investment that broadcasters and digital media companies are willing to make to distribute live content.

In addition, this illegal activity impedes the leagues’ ability to sell game tickets and secure local television and radio carriage, and the value of advertising revenue generated by broadcast, radio, and new media partners. Sports fans are also victims, as the costs expended by sports leagues in an effort to address on-line piracy are passed on to fans when they purchase tickets or subscribe to sports networks.

The websites seized yesterday were popular “linking” sites – a type of website that provides access, or “links,” to other websites where pirated sporting and pay-per-view events are hosted. Users simply click on a link to begin the process of downloading or streaming to their own computer an illegal broadcast of a sporting event from the third party website that is hosting the stream.

Linking websites are popular because they allow users to quickly browse content and locate illegal streams that would otherwise be more difficult to find. Visitors to these websites are being redirected to a banner that advises them that the domain name has been seized by the New York office of ICE HSI because of criminal copyright violations.

This is the third phase of Operation in Our Sites, an ongoing investigation into websites that illegally offer copyrighted and counterfeited goods. In June 2010, authorities executed seizure warrants against nine domain names of websites offering pirated copies of first-run movies. In November 2010, 82 domain names of commercial websites engaged in the illegal sale and distribution of counterfeit goods and copyrighted works were seized.

The Intellectual Property Rights Center is one of the U.S. government’s key weapons in the fight against criminal counterfeiting and piracy. The IPR Center is led by ICE HSI and includes partners from U.S. Customs and Border Protection; the FBI; the Department of Commerce; the Food and Drug Administration; the Postal Inspection Service; the General Services Administration, Office of the Inspector General; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; the Defense Criminal Investigative Service; the Army Criminal Investigative Division’s Major Procurement Fraud Unit; the Consumer Product Safety Commission, INTERPOL; and the Government of Mexico Tax Administrative Service.

The IPR Center allows law enforcement and the private sector jointly to address the growing transnational problem of counterfeit products. The IPR Center coordinates outreach to U.S. rights holders and conducts domestic and international law enforcement as well as coordinates and directs anti-counterfeiting investigations.

A friend of mine alerted me to this book you may have heard of…

It’s called “The 4-Hour Workweek” and it’s written by a
30-year-old millionaire named Timothy Ferriss – it’s been flying off the shelves from coast to coast.

The book’s philosophy essentially boils down to this…

If you manage your time, your goals, and your priorities effectively, it’s totally possible for you to generate a comfortable, full-time income working just 4 hours per week.

Say goodbye to your 9-to-5 job, and hello freedom and prosperity!

But since releasing it, Tim Ferriss has come under some
serious fire from prominent entrepreneurs who say that designing your ‘ideal lifestyle’ of
minimal work and maximum play is not that simple… that it
takes YEARS of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears to make that
happen.

But I beg to differ!

I’ve known many people who have started their own moneymaking
Internet businesses from scratch. (In fact, I count myself
among their number!)

And I can tell you this without a shadow of a doubt:

The success people like us have achieved did NOT come as a
result of how much time we’ve spent working on our businesses,
but what we’ve DONE with the time we’ve spent.

For example: Someone with clear, intentional goals and a
step-by-step action plan will accomplish wayyyyy more in 60
minutes than someone who is mired in information overload and
analysis paralysis will accomplish in 8 hours.

I’ve seen high school drop outs, retirees who are downright
scared of computers, and even teenagers achieve *massive*
success on the Internet ‘working’ as little as 4 hours per
week… and in some cases, even less than that!

It’s possible — I’ve seen it, I’ve done it, and I’d like you
to do it, too.

P.S. Here’s another secret for you…

You don’t have to know it all, learn it all, or spend days at
a time researching your next step to generate a full-time
income on the Internet. You simply need to surround yourself
with people who have the expertise that you don’t, and let
them steer you along towards success.

But where can you find such experts willing to openly share
their expertise and stand over your shoulder as you grow your
own moneymaking website? Click here now to find out!

My number 1 piece of business advice…GET STARTED!
10% of people take action, 80% follow, 10% resist action. The action takers are the ones doing business. Which describes you?

Quick start step 1:
Get the technical knowledge and business knowledge that you will need from a proven, honest source. There are several available. Of course, I recommend what I use. The Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on The Internet has helped more people get started than any other and has been around longer than most. They have a great track record.

Quick start step 2:
Get a good web host package. I have tried half a dozen in the last 10 years. The pitfalls to picking the wrong one are: poor customer service, difficult user interface, company too small to stay in business, limited features. Again, I recommend what I use. 1&1 for Web Hosting has given me great service. They have numerous packages to suit various needs. And they are big enough to be around for a long time to come. Get one of the Linux packages no matter what operating system is on your computer. The Linux packages have many more features. But the most important feature is blogging. The Windows packages are too limited. Here is a handy tool you can use to see if the domain name you want is available.

Download and install WordPress in the root directory of your domain. WordPress is FREE! It makes a great content management system as well as a blogging platform. Blogging lets you get started FAST. You won’t need to learn HTML and CSS and web design to get going. You can add to your web site easily using your web browser. Using a blog, you can put your ideas onto the site “on the fly” so you can get lots done in your “spare” time.

Is It Difficult to Start an Internet Business?

When people ask me if making money on the Internet is difficult, I always say NO! In fact, I almost stumbled onto the pathway to success.

Here is what I did

I put together a web site based on a topic that I was really interested in (Christianity). I wrote a brief review about a favorite book and how it had affected my life in a real way. I also did a review of one of my favorite music albums. I signed up as an affiliate with a book distributor that sold these items and put links to them on the pages with the reviews.

I didn’t even know anything at the time about search engine marketing. In fact, Google was just getting started back then. I knew that I had to get some traffic, so I printed up some small business card sized adds and distributed them at a major crusade event that I soon attended.

About two weeks later I received an envelope from the book distributor. I figured it was written acknowledgement of my sign up. But when I opened it up it was a check for $1.75! It might as well have been a million dollars, I was so excited!

The only difference between making $1.75 and making $1,000,000 is the amount of work and time needed to make the larger amount. The principals used are the same.

How I Learned What to Do

Everything that I did was step by step from the The Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on The Internet course that I had purchased in 2002. I recently purchased the 2009 updated version. I still think it is the greatest resource available for anyone who wants to get an online business up and running in the shortest time possible.
